Elbe Valley

Elbe Valley

The vast and hugely popular rock area of the Elbe Valley is spread across both banks of the Elbe River from Děčín to the state border with Germany. The valley walls of the towers and massifs, made from very hard sandstone, reach impressive heights of up to 80 m and offer countless routes covering the full range of difficulties through to extreme ascents.

The left bank is now the centre for climbing in the Elbe Valley. The biggest concentration of sport routes is on the massifs between The Little Devil and The Nun. Most of these walls rise to a height of some 30 m, with an overhang of up to 8 m. This means that these are mostly higher difficulty ascents. These can be found on walls such as Blueberry Hill, The Little Devil and The Guillotine. The area is also home to one of the steepest sandstone routes - “The Mad Dance”; RP XIa. This route has a 10 m overhang with a height of 15 metres.

The right bank is the larger of the two parts of the Elbe Valley. The heart of the right bank is the part between The Rainbow Tower and Vojtěch, where there are mostly some nice classic ascents. The walls here reach heights of up to 80 m. The bulk of the harder routes can be found on the massifs and towers opposite Dolní Žleb (such as Majdaléna, The Pink Tower, The Throne, The Mirror). However, there are also some class VII and VIII ascents that have become very popular in recent years, particularly due to their length (around 60 m). The most popular massifs include The Small Bastion, The Large Bastion, Hector and The Ice Wall.
