What was originally the municipal museum was established in 1923 with the official creation of a museum association. Its members collected products and documents relating to the history of the local glass industry. They also organised themed exhibitions, first in the local glassmaking school, and then from 1927 in their own building, the former town hall at no. 5 on the square.
In 1949 approval was granted for the establishment of a specialised glass museum. The exhibition was installed in the former Conrath & Liebsch refinery building opposite the glassmaking school. In 1966 the museum was annexed as a branch of the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou, from which it split in 1991. Its founder became the Town of Kamenický Šenov. In 1968 the glass museum’s collections were opened to the public in the renovated building at no. 69, where it is still housed today.
