Kamenice River Gorges and Pravčická Gate

A majestic and awe-inspiring rock area directly in the centre of the Czech Switzerland National Park. The town of Hřensko – the lowest municipality in the Czech Republic (elev. 115 metres) located in the  Kamenice River Canyon (the Kamenice River is extremely prone to devastating floods that occurred here in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013) offers a long but very beautiful loop through the Kamenice River Canyon. In the Edmundova and Wild Gorges (Edmundova a Divoká soutěska) you can take a boat trip past bizarre rock formations. After a refreshment in the village of Mezní Louka, you can continue  along the Gabriela Trail (Gabrielina stezka) up to the huge Wing Wall (Křídelní stěna) and to the Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) – the largest sandstone arch in Europe (26.5 x 16 metres). The rock promontories along the trail offer spectacular views of the table  mountains in Germany and of the rugged scenery of the Czech Switzerland.

Route:  Edmundova Gorge (Edmundova soutěska) –– Mezná – Mezní Louka – Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) – Hřensko

Route Description:  From Hřensko, follow the yellow-marked trail along the Kamenice River up to the platform for boat trips in the Edmundova Gorge (Edmundova soutěska). After approx. 20-minute boat trip, continue following the yellow-marked trail (we recommend visiting a local exhibition in a log cabin en route) leading to Mezní  můstek. Here, turn left and follow the green-marked trail. After a relatively steep climb, you will come to the village of Mezná. From here, continue along the road with sporadic lookouts of the rock massif and of the Pravčická Gate up to the village of Mezní Louka. Here, take the red-marked trail (Gabriela's Trail) and continue along the rocks with sporadic lookouts up to the Pravčická Gate. Here, you can spend a lot of time enjoying beautiful views from many vantage points. From this largest sandstone arch in Europe, go down following the red-marked trail again (you can also see the Czech Brethren Cave (jeskyně Českých bratří) en route) across the wood up to the road ("Tři prameny" crossroads). Here, you can either take a bus or continue along the red-marked trail to Hřensko.
