If you want to enjoy the quiet beauty of our rock towns, take a trip to the Broumov region in winter. There are several beautiful places there that are really worth a visit. A one-day trip is definitely a great idea, but what about a longer stay? You can plan a long weekend or a week’s holiday and pick yourself out some accommodation and places to eat in the Broumov region.

Adršpach Rocks

Adršpach Rocks are traditionally open in the winter, too. Whether you walk round all the rocks, or just the older section, known as the "Old Part" (from the entrance to the rocks to the Small Waterfall), depends entirely on the weather. When they’re covered in snow the rocks take on a completely different appearance and a walk amongst them really is a fairy-tale experience. The waterfalls are sheathed in ice, and the rocks are frosted and swathed in blankets of snow, as if they’d been cursed for the winter by an evil wizard. The only place that is not accessible in winter is the rock Lagoon, on which punts sail in the summer season. The Lagoon is drained for the winter. The lagoon in the former sand quarry right by the entrance ticket office, on the other hand, can be admired in all its glory whatever the weather. Adršpach Rocks don’t attract as many tourists in the winter as they do in the summer. This means you can enjoy some peace, quiet and solitude there, as you can everywhere else in the Broumov region.

Although Adršpach Rocks are not packed with visitors in the winter, unlike in the summer, we still recommend using the new admission ticket booking system. You’ll get a considerable discount on the admission price.

Winter at Ostaš

The Ostaš rock labyrinths are a well-known destination for trips. Tourists also traditionally visit them in winter, when the blanket of snow, hoar frost and icicles on the overhanging walls completely change how they look. The two hiking circuits are not maintained in the winter, but they’re still fairly easy to walk if you take a bit of extra care. After the bark beetle-infested trees have been felled in autumn, especially in the Upper Labyrinth, some completely new vistas open up that will surprise even those who know Ostaš like the palm of their hand.

Teplické skály rocks in winter

You can walk the entire hiking circuit at Teplické skály rocks in winter, too. If there’s been a heavy snowfall then it’s sure to be an adventurous expedition, but the circuit is doable on most days in the winter. The deep gorges of Siberia seem to loom even closer when covered in snow, as the slowly freezing Skalní potok stream gurgles under your feet. On fine days the Temple Walls are lit until the late afternoon by the setting sun, while the Temple Squares are unusually silent. You can combine a tour of Teplické skály rocks with a longer hike, including a walk up to the highest peak of the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks – Čáp. On the summit there is a lookout tower offering beautiful panoramic views of the Giant Mountains right across to the Eagle Mountains.

Broumovské stěny rocks in winter

The wild ridge of Broumovské stěny rocks is particularly popular with hardier hikers. Although you can also get to some of the main attractions and their beautiful lookout towers by taking a short walk from the nearest car parks, you do need more time to walk the entire ridge of Broumovské stěny rocks. It really is lovely there in winter, and with a little extra care most of the footpaths are manageable. The morning mists that gather in the Broumov Basin are unforgettable. When there’s plenty of snow in the winter you’ll find it easy going wearing snowshoes. There are cross-country skiing trails running through the Broumov Basin below the Broumovské stěny rocks, or on the top slopes running from Police nad Metují. Most of all, however, the area around Machov, on the boundary between Broumovské stěny and the Polish Table Mountains, is a paradise for -country skiers.
